Sandy Cadets take home Gold, Silver & Bronze

On Sunday 12th May, Air Cadets from 22 (Sandy) Squadron took home a staggering haul of 16 medals at this year’s Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire wing athletics competition.

Competing against cadets from across Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire, the cadets managed to impressively win nine Gold medals, five Silver and 2 bronze, doubling the Squadron’s previous best ever result of eight medals.

The Squadron won the first event of the day, with Cadet Connor Kilby (13), Cadet Peter Hessey (14), Cadet Matthew Foster (14), and Cadet Ian Mansion (14) taking first place in the Class A Boys 4x100 metre relay, each receiving a gold medal. In Class A Boys, Cadet Kilby also took the bronze in the Discus, and Cadet Mansion won gold in the 800 metres, and silver in both the Shot, and Javelin.

In the Class B Youths, Cadet Corporal William Clubb (16) took two impressive wins in both the 100 metre and 200 metre sprints, as well taking silver in the long jump.

The Class E Junior Women also took a haul of medals, with Cadet Corporal Lauren Barton (16) taking Gold medals in the 800 metres, and long jump for the second year running, as well as a Silver in the 100 metres, and Cadet Flight Sergeant Laura Dorrell (16) received Silver in the Shot, and bronze in the Discus.

Cadet Corporal Lauren Barton commented, “A very good job done by all! Especially pleased to see the effort from the cadets and having achieved as much as they did”.
Many of the medal winning cadets will now have the opportunity of going on to represent Bedfordshire and Cambridgeshire wing at the Inter-Wing athletics competition on the 2nd June.
