“The Sound of Music”                                         26 Feb 08

Air Cadet Robert Hubbard from 22 (Sandy) Squadron was one of 46 Air Cadets who were lucky enough to be selected to attend the Air Cadet National Music Camp which was held last week at RAF Cranwell.

The week entailed music practises leading up to a high profile concert last Friday playing with the Royal Air Force College Cranwell Band. Many varieties of music from “Valerie, Little Britain” to “Venture Adventure”, the Air Cadet March were performed.

The week also included an afternoon trip to the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight and a visit to see the Red Arrows. Upon visiting the Red Arrows, Red 6 and 7 flew a demonstration of their daring aerobatic stunts. There was also a Dining In Night during the week, where guests such as the Air Cadet Chief of Staff and the Royal Air Force College Band Master were present.

Upon leaving Cadet Hubbard, who played the Bass-Clarinet, was presented with a golden instrumentalist badge and certificate. He commented “I really enjoyed the week’s experience, especially the visit to see the Red Arrows. I believe my abilities have grown since the experience of playing with members of the RAF College Band. I really enjoyed performing at the Concert, and I would love to take part in next years Air Cadet National Music Camp again, it was an experience I will never forget”.

Cadet Hubbard has been with Sandy Air Cadets for 3 years. His dream is to fly in the Royal Air Force as a fast jet fighter pilot. Robert is currently training for his PPL at Cranfield in a Pitts special. His hobbies are enjoying playing and listening to music. He currently plays the Bb clarinet, bass-clarinet, and the tenor saxophone. He has been involved in many musical activities such as touring the UK and winning the “Young Musician of the Year 2008” at his School, Sandy Upper. Cadet Hubbard has now decided to take his BTEC in Music at the Squadron starting later this year.
